FAQs

The questions our showroom hears most, answered properly rather than briefly. If yours is not here, call 01924 533 591 and you will speak to someone in the building where the beds are made.

Ottoman and storage beds

How do ottoman beds work?

Two gas pistons lift the entire mattress platform to reveal a storage cavity the full footprint of the bed — around 800 litres in a king, which is four large suitcases. The pistons are matched to your mattress weight during manufacture, so the deck lifts with one hand and holds itself open at any angle. Side-lift needs 70cm of clear floor beside the bed; end-lift needs the length of the bed plus 40cm of headroom.

How much clearance does an ottoman bed need?

A side-lift ottoman needs 70cm of clear floor on the lifting side. An end-lift needs the length of the bed plus 40cm above the footboard, which is the measurement people forget when the bed sits under a sloped ceiling or a window. Measure before you order and, if in doubt, send a photograph of the room to WhatsApp on +44 7938 472 802.

Should I choose an ottoman or drawers?

Ottoman gives you roughly two and a half times the volume and holds bulky bedding easily, but needs floor clearance to open. Drawers give you around 40% of that volume in smaller, more accessible portions and work where the bed sits tight against a wall. If you store duvets and suitcases, choose ottoman. If you store folded clothes you reach for daily, choose drawers. Compare both in ottoman storage beds.

Sizing and fit

What size bed do I need?

Single 3ft (90 × 190cm) for children and box rooms. Small Double 4ft (120 × 190cm) for a single adult who wants room, or a guest room. Double 4ft6 (135 × 190cm) is the UK standard for two adults. King 5ft (150 × 200cm) adds 15cm width and 10cm length — the length matters if either of you is over 6ft. Super King 6ft (180 × 200cm) gives each sleeper the width of a single bed. Whichever you choose, leave 70cm of clear floor on every side you walk down.

UK bed sizes
Size Imperial Metric Suits
Single 3ft 90 × 190cm Children, box rooms
Small Double 4ft 120 × 190cm One adult, guest rooms
Double 4ft6 135 × 190cm Two adults, UK standard
King 5ft 150 × 200cm Two adults, one over 6ft
Super King 6ft 180 × 200cm Maximum comfort, larger rooms

What headboard height should I choose?

A 120cm standard headboard reads correctly in a room with 2.4m ceilings, which is most UK new-builds. A 145cm or 160cm headboard needs 2.6m or more before it stops feeling like it is pressing down on the bed. Measure floor to ceiling before you decide, and remember the headboard also has to clear your stairwell on delivery day.

Construction and durability

How are Legend beds made?

Kiln-dried hardwood is cut and jointed in our Dewsbury workshop, squared with a diagonal check, hand-sprung where the design calls for it, layered with high-density foam, and hand-upholstered in your chosen fabric by one person from start to finish. Core frames take four days, hand-tufted luxury frames nine, bespoke six to eight weeks. Nothing is subcontracted and nothing is imported finished. Read more about our factory.

How long should a bed last?

A kiln-dried hardwood frame with hand-tied springs lasts fifteen to twenty years and is worth reupholstering rather than replacing. Foam and upholstery soften noticeably at around eight years. Mattresses should be replaced every seven to eight years regardless of how they feel, because support degrades before comfort does. Our frames carry a ten-year guarantee, upholstery five, gas pistons two.

How should I care for the fabric?

Vacuum with a soft brush head monthly. Blot spills, never rub. Velvet and chenille recover with a soft brush once dry; bouclé should be dabbed and left alone. Never use a steam cleaner on any upholstered bed, and keep frames out of direct sunlight — every fabric fades, and velvet fades unevenly.

Mattresses

Which mattress is best for me?

Match firmness to weight and sleeping position rather than to spring count. Under 11 stone: medium. Eleven to sixteen stone: medium-firm. Over sixteen stone: firm with a reinforced perimeter. Side sleepers should go one step softer than their weight suggests, because the mattress needs to yield at hip and shoulder. If two sleepers differ by more than four stone, a zip-and-link in two firmnesses is the only honest answer. Browse our mattresses.

Does spring count matter?

Far less than the marketing suggests, and only within the same construction. A 1000-pocket mattress with a well-specified comfort layer will outperform a 3000-pocket one with a thin foam top. What determines comfort is the relationship between your weight, your sleeping position and the firmness.

Ordering, delivery and returns

What is the delivery time and cost?

Free to UK mainland, typically seven to fourteen days from order. You pick a date at checkout and we confirm a two-hour window by text the evening before. Two people carry the bed to the room of your choice, assemble it and take the packaging with them. Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland add £45 and two days. Full detail on delivery, returns and warranty.

Can I return a bed if I change my mind?

Yes — 100 nights on any stock frame or mattress. We collect free of charge and refund within five working days of collection. Bespoke commissions and orders in customer's own material are excluded, and we say so clearly before you pay a deposit.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes. 0% APR representative over 12 months on orders over £400, or four interest-free instalments on any order, both arranged at checkout. See finance.

Can I see a bed before I buy it?

Yes. The showroom is inside the factory at Legend Works, Bradford Road, Dewsbury WF13 2ES, open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.30pm. If you cannot travel, order free fabric swatches instead — they answer the question photographs cannot.
