What is a divan ottoman bed?

A divan ottoman combines the two formats. It has the low, fully upholstered profile of a divan base, but instead of side drawers the whole mattress platform lifts on gas struts to open a single storage cavity running the full footprint of the bed.

The result is more storage volume than a drawer divan, in a base that still sits flush to the floor and takes a separate headboard.

How it compares

Side lift or end lift?

A side-lift base opens along the long edge. Choose it where the bed has clear floor space to one side but sits close to a wall at the foot.

An end-lift base opens from the foot. Choose it where both sides are tight — an alcove, or a bed between two walls or wardrobes.

Pick the direction that matches your actual floor space. The mechanism cannot usually be changed after ordering.

Before you order

• Decide side lift or end lift based on where you have floor space.
• Measure doorways, stairwells and turns for the largest single component.
• Check the mattress depth range the base is designed for.
• Add mattress depth to base height for the finished sitting height.
• Allow extra length behind the bed for a floor-standing headboard.

Questions before you choose

Is a divan ottoman the same as an ottoman bed? The storage mechanism is the same. The difference is the base style — a divan ottoman is upholstered to the floor and takes a separate headboard, where an ottoman bed frame usually has one built in.

Does a heavy mattress affect the lift? Yes. Gas struts are rated for a mattress weight range. A very heavy mattress makes the platform harder to raise and lower.

Can I keep my existing headboard? Usually yes, if the fixing type matches. Check whether yours is strutted or floor-standing before ordering.

How much floor space does the lid need? Enough to swing clear on the opening side. Measure the bed length or width in that direction and check nothing obstructs it.
