Collection: Double Divan Beds
Double Divan Beds (4FT6)
A UK standard double divan takes a 135cm × 190cm mattress on a fully upholstered base. It is the most-bought bed size in Britain and the size where divans still outsell frames by a wide margin.
Why 4FT6 divans dominate UK bedrooms
Three reasons, in order of how often they actually decide the purchase:
-
Storage without losing floor space. Two or four drawers built into the base give you a chest of drawers' worth of capacity in a room that has no wall left for one.
-
Cost. A divan base is cheaper to make than an equivalent frame, and 4FT6 mattresses and bedding are the cheapest and most widely stocked of any UK size.
-
Delivery. The base splits into two 67.5cm halves. It goes up narrow Victorian staircases where a rigid double frame will not.
Drawer configurations
-
2 drawers — both on one side. Correct choice when one side of the bed is against a wall.
-
4 drawers — two per side. Needs 50–60cm clear floor on both sides.
-
No drawers — a plain platform base, cheapest option, still gives full mattress support.
Decide this by measuring your walkways, not by capacity. A four-drawer bed with one side against a wall gives you two usable drawers and two you can never open.
Room clearance
135cm for the bed plus 60cm to walk and make it. A double divan works from around 250cm room width, comfortably from 280cm. Add drawer pull-out depth on whichever sides carry drawers.
