Strutted or floor-standing?

UK headboards come in two mounting types, and they are not interchangeable.

Check what your base takes before ordering. A divan base with bolt holes accepts a strutted headboard; a base without them needs a floor-standing one.

Matching headboard to bed size

A headboard should match the width of the bed, not the mattress. Order the headboard in the same size name as the bed.

Choosing a height

Headboard height changes the proportion of the whole room, not just the bed. A tall headboard suits a room with high ceilings and draws the eye upward. A low headboard suits sloped ceilings, loft rooms and beds under a window.

Measure from floor level to the underside of any window sill, radiator, shelf or sloped ceiling behind the bed, then check the headboard's total height against that figure. Remember the mattress depth raises where the headboard visually begins.

Before you order

• Confirm whether your base takes strutted or floor-standing fixings.
• Order the headboard in the same size as the bed.
• Measure any obstruction behind the bed, especially a window sill or radiator.
• Allow floor depth behind the base for a floor-standing design.
• Check the headboard fits through the doorway — it is often the widest single piece.

Questions before you choose

Can I fit a headboard to any bed? Not always. Ottoman and platform frames with integrated headboards cannot usually take a separate one. Divan bases generally can.

Will a king headboard fit a double bed? No. It will overhang by 15cm on each side and will not line up with the fixing points.

Are fixings included? Bolts are normally supplied with strutted headboards. Check the product page before ordering if you are replacing an old headboard.

Does a headboard need to be wall-mounted? No. Both types are supported by the bed base rather than the wall, though a floor-standing design is often positioned tight against the wall for stability.
