The right headboard height is set by your wall, not your taste: measure from the floor to the first obstruction behind the bed, and choose a headboard that clears it. Within that limit, taller gives better back support and more presence; lower gives the wall back and suits smaller rooms.

How to measure for headboard height

  1. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction on the wall behind the bed: a window sill, radiator shelf, light switch, picture rail or the start of a sloping ceiling.
  2. Subtract a few centimetres for clearance. This is your maximum overall headboard height.
  3. Compare it with the "from floor" height on the product page. Legend Beds lists this for many designs, for example 90cm on the Frost Teddy Bouclé Low Bed, 115cm on the Willow and approximately 120cm on the Aspen.

Then check how much headboard shows above the mattress. Base height plus mattress depth tells you where the visible part begins.

Low, standard or tall: which suits you?

Headboard Suits Trade-off
Low Beds under a window, sloping ceilings, rooms where you want art above the bed Less back support when sitting up
Standard Most bedrooms and ceiling heights Less of a statement
Tall High ceilings, large empty walls, reading or watching TV in bed Needs a clear wall and fits fewer rooms

Does a tall headboard make a room look smaller?

In a room with an ordinary ceiling height, a very tall headboard can make the ceiling feel lower, because it fills the space the eye uses to judge height. Under a high ceiling it does the opposite and stops a bed looking lost. The Tower Bed is built for that second situation.

Which height is best for reading in bed?

Tall. If you also watch TV in bed, a TV bed pairs well with a tall headboard. A headboard that reaches your shoulders when you sit up supports your whole back, so you don't need a pile of pillows. Deep-buttoned designs are the most comfortable to lean on, because the padding is deepest between the buttons; the Chesterfield Tall Headboard Bed is the example in the Legend Beds tall-headboard group.

What if my bed goes under a window?

Measure to the sill and choose low. The Low Double-Panelled Bed is the low-profile design in the tall-headboard family, made for exactly the rooms where a tall headboard won't fit: under windows, in front of radiators, below picture rails.

Headboard height under a sloping ceiling

In a loft room, the headboard usually sits against the lower wall. Measure at both ends of the headboard, as the slope may run across the bed rather than along it. A low platform design keeps the whole bed down. How high should a bed be? covers loft rooms in more detail.

Browse by headboard height

For height, the tall-headboard designs such as the Vertical Channel and Sunburst tall headboard beds make the most of a big wall. For a separate headboard, the floor-standing headboards come in every UK width. Shape is a separate choice; see headboard styles explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard headboard height?

There's no single standard. Low headboards sit not far above the mattress, while tall designs reach well above sitting shoulder height. Always check the from-floor height on the product page.

How much headboard should show above the mattress?

Enough to lean against comfortably when sitting up if you read in bed. If you don't, it's purely a matter of proportion and what fits below the wall obstruction.

Can a headboard cover a radiator?

It's best not to. A headboard in front of a radiator blocks heat and can dry out upholstery. Choose a low design that clears it, or move the bed.

Does mattress depth change headboard height?

It changes how much of the headboard you see. A deeper mattress hides more of it, so check base height plus mattress depth against the headboard.

Are tall headboards harder to deliver?

They're often the largest single piece. Measure your doorways and stair turns first using the bed delivery measuring guide.
