A TV bed hides a television inside the footboard and raises it on an electric lift when you want to watch. Lowered, the bed looks like an ordinary upholstered frame. It's worth it if you watch in bed most evenings and don't want a screen on the wall; it's poor value if you watch in bed only occasionally.

How does a TV bed work?

The footboard is a deep, upholstered housing. Inside it, the television is fixed to a motorised lift. Press the remote and the screen rises out of the top of the footboard; press again and it drops back out of sight. Cables run inside the frame to a single plug. Legend Beds TV bed lift motors run from a standard UK 13amp socket, so no special wiring is needed.

Does a TV bed come with a TV?

No. Legend Beds TV beds are supplied without a television, and the mattress is sold separately. You fit your own screen to the lift.

What size TV fits a TV bed?

It depends on the bed size, because a wider bed has a wider footboard housing. Legend Beds lists the maximum screen size for each size of each model on that model's product page, rather than one figure for the whole range. Before ordering, check three things:

  1. The maximum screen size for the exact bed size you're buying.
  2. Your TV's full width, including the bezel.
  3. That your TV uses a standard VESA wall-mount pattern.

Is a TV bed worth it?

It's worth it if the bedroom is where you watch most, if there's no good wall for a mounted screen (a chimney breast, a window, a sloping ceiling), or if you want the TV out of sight when you sleep. It also combines two pieces of furniture into one, since every Legend Beds TV bed includes storage.

It's less good value if you rarely watch in bed, or if you'd rather upgrade the TV and bed on different timelines. The lift adds cost, and the footboard adds length.

What storage do TV beds have?

Legend Beds TV beds use one of two formats. Ottoman models, such as the Regent TV Bed with Ottoman Storage, lift the whole mattress platform on gas struts. The Kensington TV Bed with Divan Drawers uses side-access drawers instead, which need side clearance but no lifting. The ottoman vs divan guide explains which suits your room.

What to check before ordering

  • Room length: the TV footboard is deeper than an ordinary one, so measure from the headboard wall to the nearest obstruction at the foot.
  • A mains socket reachable from the foot of the bed.
  • Ceiling or shelf height above the footboard, so the screen can rise fully.
  • Floor space for the ottoman lid or drawers to open.
  • Access: the footboard housing is a large single piece. See the delivery measuring guide.

Which TV bed style?

TV beds come in the same styles as other beds. The Chelsea Wingback TV Bed has a wingback headboard, the Hudson Chesterfield TV Bed is deep-buttoned, and the Aurora Bouclé TV Bed uses a textured bouclé fabric. The Vertex Slim and Empire Grand sit at the plain and statement ends of the range. Compare them all in the TV beds collection.

Frequently asked questions

Do TV beds need special wiring?

No. Legend Beds TV bed lift motors plug into a standard UK 13amp socket.

Can I watch TV lying flat in a TV bed?

The screen rises from the footboard at roughly the height of your feet, so it's most comfortable when you're propped up against the headboard. A tall or wingback headboard helps.

What happens if my TV is too big?

It won't seat correctly in the housing. Always check the maximum screen size for the specific bed size, not the largest figure in the range.

Can I put a soundbar in a TV bed?

Check the product page for space in the footboard housing. Many people use a wireless speaker or headphones instead.

Are TV beds noisy?

You'll hear the motor while the screen moves. It only runs for the few seconds it takes to raise or lower the TV.
