An ottoman bed stores items in one large cavity accessed by lifting the whole mattress base on gas struts. A divan bed stores items in fitted drawers built into the sides of the base. Ottoman beds hold roughly three to four times more, but divan drawers are quicker to open for everyday items.

Ottoman vs divan at a glance

Ottoman bed Divan bed
Storage capacity (double) ~370 litres ~90–120 litres (4 drawers)
Access Lift whole base Pull out drawer
Side clearance needed None Yes — drawers must open into the room
Foot clearance needed ~60cm for end-lift None
Best for Duvets, suitcases, seasonal clothes Bedding, nightwear, daily items
Typical cost Higher — gas-lift mechanism Lower

Choose an ottoman bed if…

  • You need maximum storage and would otherwise buy a chest of drawers.
  • Your bed sits against a wall or in an alcove where drawers could not open.
  • You store bulky items — spare duvets, suitcases, off-season clothing.
  • You have around 60cm of clear floor at the foot of the bed.

Choose a divan bed if…

  • You want cheaper storage and do not need much of it.
  • You access stored items daily and do not want to move the mattress each time.
  • Your ceiling is low or sloped, making a full base lift awkward.
  • You have clear floor at the side of the bed but not at the foot.

What about an ottoman divan?

An ottoman divan combines both formats — a divan-style upholstered base fitted with a gas-lift mechanism instead of drawers. It gives divan looks with ottoman capacity, and is the format most people actually mean when they search for a storage bed.

Each option has its own guide: side lift vs end lift ottoman beds, how gas-lift ottoman beds work, divan beds with drawers and divan ottoman vs ottoman bed frame.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, an ottoman or a divan bed?

Neither is better outright. Ottoman beds win on capacity and work in tighter room layouts; divan beds win on cost and ease of daily access. If storage is the main reason you are buying, choose ottoman.

Are ottoman beds harder to assemble?

Slightly. The gas struts must be fitted correctly, which adds around 10 minutes to a standard 30–45 minute assembly. No specialist tools are needed.

Do ottoman beds break more easily?

The gas struts are the only moving part and are rated for many thousands of cycles. Overloading the cavity beyond its rated weight is the usual cause of premature strut wear.

Can you convert a divan bed to an ottoman?

No. The base construction is different — an ottoman base is built as a hinged frame with a reinforced perimeter. Converting is not practical.

Is a divan bed cheaper than an ottoman?

Generally yes, because there is no lift mechanism. The gap narrows as you add drawers, since each drawer adds cost.
