A bed's headboard does most of the visual work in a bedroom, and the style you pick changes more than looks. Some shapes need extra width, some collect dust, some suit a low ceiling and some only work under a high one. Here is what each common UK style is, and the practical trade-off that comes with it.

Headboard styles at a glance

Style What defines it Practical note
Panel Flat upholstered panel with squared edges Easiest to clean, suits almost any room
Channel or line Vertical or horizontal stitched ribs Adds texture; dust settles in the grooves
Chesterfield Deep buttoning in a diamond grid Comfortable to lean on; highest-maintenance finish
Wingback Side panels that come forward around the pillows Adds width beyond the mattress
Sleigh Rolled headboard with a matching footboard Adds length; you can't sit on the end
Curved, arched or cloud Shaped top edge instead of a straight line Softens a room full of straight edges

What is a panel bed?

A panel headboard is a flat, padded board with clean edges. It is the calmest style and the most forgiving to live with: there are no buttons or grooves for dust, and a mid-tone fabric hides years of leaning back to read. The Legend Beds Panel Bed is the plain version; the Low Double-Panelled Bed splits the panel in two for a little structure on a lower headboard.

Choose a panel if the bedroom already has a strong feature, such as patterned wallpaper, and you want the bed to sit quietly.

What is a channel or line headboard?

Channelled headboards are stitched into parallel ribs. Vertical lines make a headboard look taller; horizontal lines make it look wider. That's a useful trick. In a room with a low ceiling, horizontal lines stop the bed looking cramped, and in a narrow room vertical lines draw the eye upward instead of across.

The Legend Beds tall-headboard group includes both directions, with the Vertical Line and Horizontal Line tall headboard beds. The trade-off is maintenance, since the seams hold dust. A vacuum brush run along each channel every few weeks keeps them even.

What is a Chesterfield bed?

A Chesterfield headboard is deep-buttoned. The fabric is drawn back at each button and folds into diagonal pleats between them, so the pattern has real depth. It casts shadows in morning light and looks flatter under a ceiling light at night.

Buttoning has a comfort advantage too: padding is deepest between the buttons, which makes it pleasant to lean against. The Chesterfield Tall Headboard Bed is the fullest version in the range; the Chesterfield Ottoman Divan Bed puts buttoning on a divan-style storage base. Expect to vacuum the button recesses regularly, particularly in pale fabric.

What is a wingback bed?

Wings are side panels that return forward around the pillows. They cut draughts from an outside wall and give you something to lean into when sitting up. They also add width beyond the mattress, so measure for bedside tables before ordering. The wingback beds guide covers the style in depth.

What is a sleigh bed?

A sleigh bed has a headboard that rolls back at the top and a footboard that mirrors it. It looks finished from every side, including from the doorway, which is why it suits a bed that sits in the middle of a wall facing the door. The Roman Sleigh Bed and the Orla Teddy Bouclé Sleigh Bed both use this shape over a gas-lift ottoman base.

The footboard is the catch. It adds length and stops you sitting on the end of the bed, so check the distance from the headboard wall to the nearest obstruction at the foot.

What is the difference between curved, arched and cloud headboards?

A curved headboard has one soft radius across the top. An arched headboard is taller, closer to a semicircle, and needs ceiling height to work. A cloud headboard has several rounded humps, like the three on the Willow Teddy Bouclé Cloud Bed. All of them soften a room with a lot of straight lines, such as fitted wardrobes and sash windows. Browse the curved and arched beds collection to compare shapes.

Which headboard style suits my room?

  • Low or sloping ceiling: a low panel or horizontal-line headboard.
  • High ceiling with a big empty wall: a tall channelled or Chesterfield headboard.
  • Cold outside wall behind the bed: a wingback.
  • Bed seen straight on from the door: a sleigh, which looks finished at both ends.
  • Busy household, little time for upkeep: a flat panel.

Height is a separate decision from shape. What height headboard do I need? explains how to measure the wall first.

Beds to compare by style

Style is the last of the big decisions; the bed buying guide covers size, storage and headboard height first. The full Legend Beds range can be browsed by base type, and the upholstered bed frames collection gathers framed designs. If you already have a base and only want a new look, the floor-standing headboards come in panel, wingback and Chesterfield styles.

Frequently asked questions

Which headboard style is easiest to keep clean?

A flat panel. With no buttons or stitched channels, dust has nowhere to settle and a quick vacuum with a soft brush covers the whole surface.

Are Chesterfield beds old-fashioned?

The buttoning is traditional, but the fabric changes the effect. In a flat or pale fabric a Chesterfield reads as more modern; in deep velvet it reads as classic. Ordering swatches helps you judge this before buying.

Do sleigh beds take up more room?

Yes, lengthways. The rolled footboard adds to the overall length compared with a bed without a footboard, so measure from the headboard wall to the nearest obstruction at the foot before ordering.

Can I get a storage base with any headboard style?

Across the Legend Beds range, most styles are built on a gas-lift ottoman base. Divan-drawer versions exist for some panel and Chesterfield designs. Check each product page for the base type.

Do vertical lines on a headboard make a room look taller?

They draw the eye upward, which helps a room feel taller. Horizontal lines do the opposite and make the bed read as wider, which suits a low-ceilinged room.
