A UK king is 150 x 200cm and a super king is 180 x 200cm. They're the same length; the super king is 30cm wider. Each of two sleepers gets 90cm, the width of a single bed each. Whether that upgrade is worth it depends on how you sleep and whether your room can give up the extra floor.

Who actually needs a super king?

If you're still weighing up bed types as well as sizes, start with how to choose a bed. A super king earns its space when one person's movement keeps the other awake. That covers a partner who turns a lot, one of you getting up early for shifts, a pet on the bed, or a small child who arrives at 3am. With 90cm each, you share a bed but not the disturbance.

If you both sleep soundly, a king is usually enough. At 75cm each, it's already 7.5cm more per person than a double.

Will a super king fit my bedroom?

As a rough guide, a super king wants a room of around 4m x 3.5m or larger once you allow walking space on both sides; a king is comfortable in a room around 3.5m x 3m. Measure your actual room with the bed's full footprint, which is larger than the mattress once the frame and headboard are included.

Storage opening adds to this. An end-lift ottoman needs floor at the foot; a divan with drawers needs floor at the sides. Where to put the bed covers clearances.

Will it go up my stairs?

This is the question to answer before you order a super king. Measure every doorway and stair turn on the route to the bedroom, and compare them with the widest single piece of the bed, which is often the headboard. The bed delivery measuring guide walks through it.

What about bedding?

Super king bedding is widely available but costs more than king, and you'll need it for every set. A super king duvet on a king bed gives generous overhang; some couples on a king use a super king duvet for exactly this reason, which solves duvet-stealing without a bigger bed.

How much more does a super king cost?

Across the Legend Beds range, a super king costs £40 more than the king of the same design. The bigger cost is usually the mattress and bedding. Check current prices on each product page.

Is super king storage much bigger?

An ottoman cavity runs under the whole mattress, so a super king base covers 20% more floor area than a king of the same design. If storage is the main reason you're buying, that extra area is real.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UK super king the same as a US king?

No. A US king is roughly 193cm wide, about 13cm wider than a UK super king. Bedding and mattresses bought abroad won't fit UK frames.

Can two single mattresses go on a super king bed?

Two 90cm single mattresses match a 180cm super king in width, but singles are 190cm long against the super king's 200cm, so a 10cm gap is left at the foot. Zip-and-link mattresses made to super king length avoid this.

Is a king or super king better for a couple with a baby?

If the baby will sometimes sleep in your bed, a super king gives far more room. Always follow current safe-sleep guidance for infants.

Is a 6ft bed a super king?

Yes. In the UK, 6ft means super king (180 x 200cm) and 5ft means king (150 x 200cm).

Do I need a bigger headboard for a super king?

Yes. Headboards are sized to match the bed, so order a super king headboard for a super king base. See the headboards collection.
