Why divan construction matters most at 6FT

Super king is the width where base construction stops being a preference and becomes structural. A 180cm mattress unsupported across its centre will dip over time, and slatted frames at this width almost always need a centre rail and extra legs to compensate.

A divan base sidesteps the problem entirely. It arrives as two linked 90cm halves forming a continuous upholstered platform, so there is no unsupported span anywhere under the mattress. This is why the majority of 6FT beds sold in the UK are divans rather than frames.

Storage at super king

Because the base splits into two halves, drawer configurations at 6FT are more flexible than at smaller sizes — typically 2, 4 or continental (four half-width drawers). Points to weigh:

• Drawers pull out sideways and need 50–60cm clear floor. At 180cm wide, most 6FT beds have at least one side against a wall, so plan which side your drawers go before ordering.
• A 6FT ottoman gives more total capacity than 6FT drawers and needs no side clearance, but you must lift the mattress to reach anything.

Before you order

• Floor width: 180cm plus access. Realistically a room of 330cm or more.
• Bedding cost: 6FT duvets and fitted sheets are more expensive and less widely stocked than 5FT. Budget for it.
• Delivery: the split base handles stairs well, but a 6FT headboard is a single piece. Measure your narrowest turn.
